En brefTL;DR

India Turns the Global Ranking Upside Down

Everywhere else, this market is a two-horse race between ReelShort and DramaBox. In India, they are footnotes: ReelShort holds 1.1M monthly actives, DramaBox 2.8M — third and second place behind Kuku TV's 36.7M MAU and 41%+ market share (MPA via Storyboard18, 2025). Kuku passed 100M+ downloads on Google Play alone (store listing, May 2026; the company claims 170M+ across stores).

The market itself is anything but small: $300M in 2025, 450M cumulative downloads, 100M MAU (Lumikai), with short-drama downloads up +403% year over year in Q1 2026 (Sensor Tower) — and since Q3 2025, Indians download more short-drama apps than traditional OTT apps. What fails here is not the format; it is the pricing. Coin-unlock at US rates meets a market where Jio data costs ~$2 a month and 89% of discovery happens in social feeds (ShareChat/Moj data, 2026), not app stores. India is the market where the global playbook goes to get rewritten.

And one tombstone, because this market kills fast: Pocket TV shut down in 2026 (per multiple Indian press reports) — despite parent Pocket FM running at a $400M ARR. Reach without a monetization model that fits Indian willingness-to-pay is a burn rate, not a business.

The Real Fight: Coins vs Free, Not App vs App

Read the table again and the pattern is not local-versus-foreign — it is paid-unlock versus free. Every winner either prices for India (Kuku), rides free social distribution (ShareChat), or drops the paywall entirely (Tadka, Fatafat). Every laggard imports USD coin pricing into a UPI-micro-payment economy. FICCI-EY sizes the segment at INR 6.5B growing 50%+ a year through 2028, powered by Tier-II/III adoption and UPI autopay — infrastructure built for small, frictionless payments, not $19.99 weekly passes.

The 2030 projections run from $3.4B to $4.5B depending on methodology (Lumikai's trajectory being the most aggressive: $300M → $1.5B by end-2026 → $4.5B). Whichever number lands, the direction is the same — and with JioHotstar putting micro-dramas in front of an IPL audience for free, the question for every coin-based app in India is not growth. It is relevance.
